Ukrainian market matured to import cabbages
Beginning of white cabbage imports was not a surprise for market participants this year. Many predicted cabbage supplies to begin in January when prices for produce started to grow rapidly. By the end of January Ukrainian cabbage prices reached UAH 6.00/kg (EUR 0.56/kg), the highest level over all period of Fruit-Inform Project's market monitoring since 2004.
Till now, cabbage exports were restrained by high prices in the domestic markets of supplying countries. However, imported cabbages emerged in small quantities at the markets of western and central regions of Ukraine already this week. Supplies are conducted predominantly from Poland, as well as periodically from Georgia. Wholesalers report of imported cabbage prices being comparable with domestic producers' prices. Large wholesale lots of cabbages are offered at UAH 5.00-5.40/kg (EUR 0.47-0.50/kg), prices for small wholesale lots vary within UAH 5.60-6.00/kg (EUR 0.52-0.56/kg).
What cabbage import volumes will Ukraine have in this season, and what prospects will this market have in the new MY? These and many other questions will be discussed during the third international conference ”Potato and Vegetables of Ukraine-2011”.
This event is to take place at Shuvar, the largest wholesale market for fresh fruit and vegetable produce, Lvov, Ukraine, February 24-25, 2011. Applications for participation are accepted on-line through this link.
