Further slump of fruit and vegetable prices in Ukraine
Fruit-Inform Project's fruit and vegetable index shows that last week fruit and vegetable prices fell by 25% in Ukraine that is the sharpest weekly decrease rate in 2011. In such a way, fruit and vegetable prices have been falling in Ukraine for nine weeks in a row.
Last week practically all important products became cheaper in the country. The most significant contribution to slump of prices was made by potatoes which became 28.6% cheaper. This was a result of mass harvesting of early potatoes having started almost in all Ukrainian regions.
Fruits decreased in price averagely by 21.4% mainly due to fell of prices for watermelons, peaches and apples.
“Last week further slump of fruit and vegetable prices was favored by improvement of weather conditions that enabled to resume harvesting of early and seasonal vegetables, berries and potatoes”, Tetiana Getman, Head of Fruit-Inform Project, says. “In such a way, as of today, prices for most vegetables are lower or comparable with last year's ones, except cucumber and tomato prices which are as before higher than in 2010”, the expert continues.
Prices for greenhouse vegetables and borsch vegetables (onions, white cabbages, red beets and carrots) decreased by 12.8% and 12.1% respectively last week.
