Russia's potato imports results in the season 2010/11
According to Fruit-Inform Project, in the first 7 months of 2011 Russia imported 2 times more potatoes than in the whole year 2010. Moreover, in the whole season 2010/11 Russia's potato imports grew almost 4.5 times in comparison with the previous season. Such a growth rate is caused by sharp decrease of domestic potato production in the country due to bad harvest.
The Netherlands, Egypt and Pakistan turned out to be the major suppliers of potatoes to the market of the Russian Federation. It is interesting that Pakistan entered the group of top-three for the first time ever, as in previous years its potato exports to Russia were insignificant.
Expansion of Russia's potato import geography is connected with abolition of an import duty on potatoes from January to August 1, 2011, because of lack of supply in the Russian internal market.
More detailed information about Russia's potato imports in the new season and the potato price prospects in the first half of 2012 is available in the Russian fresh produce production and price forecast which will be presented by Fruit-Inform Project's analysts during the Fourth International Conference “Fruit & Vegetable Business of Russia – 2011”. The event will take place in conjunction with World Food Moscow, September 14, 2011. Registration of the conference participants is currently in active progress.
