Slovenia actively increasing its apple production

According to Fruit-Inform Project, European apple producers should pay more attention to Slovenia, a small country which now is actively increasing production of high-quality dessert apples.

Slovenia's apple production grew almost 2 times in last 10 years. In addition, the apple production structure changed a lot in the country: the share of high-quality fresh apples sharply increased. Furthermore, Slovenian gardeners are actively investing in new apple orchards and modern technologies. Favorable geographical location in the center of European commercial apple production and proximity to major target markets enables Slovenia to develop apple production actively.

Currently, according to Fruit-Inform Project's analysts, Slovenia's per capita apple production has already reached 35 kg a year that is well-comparable with per capita apple production of Italy (the leading apple producer in Europe) being 36.5 kg a year. Poland and Hungary have such an indicator higher than in Italy, but they have large share of apples for processing. Therefore, Slovenia becomes more and more considerable exporter of apples notwithstanding relatively low export volumes for the present .

It should be noted that other countries of this region (non-EU members) are actively developing their apple production too. In particular, Serbia is one of the most important suppliers of the Russian market, and Macedonia exports apples to many EU and CIS countries.

We would remind you that more detailed information about the weekly price situation in the Russian, Ukrainian and Polish markets for apples and other fruits and vegetables, the history of prices over last 5 years and forecasts of their changes as well as full production, import and export statistics is available for subscribers of Fruit-Inform Weekly. Also the detailed fresh produce production, trade and price forecast for Russia will be presented during the Fourth International Conference “Fruit & Vegetable Business of Russia – 2011”. The event will take place in conjunction with World Food Moscow, September 14, 2011. Registration of the conference participants is currently in active progress.
