Fruit and vegetable prices falling for 4.5 months in Ukraine

Fruit-Inform's fruit and vegetable index shows that fresh produce prices decreased by 1.3% in Ukraine last week. In such a way, fruits and vegetables have been stably falling in price for 4.5 months (since the mid-May)! This is one of the longest fresh produce price decrease trends in Ukraine's history.

“Our fruit and vegetable price forecasts are being corroborated to consumers' joy and producers' huge displeasure”, Tetiana Getman, Head of Fruit-Inform, says. “Unfortunately, the majority of producers expect significant growth of fresh produce prices in winter and spring that is rather doubtful against a background of the current supply and demand balance in the Ukrainian market”, Mrs. Getman continues.

Carrots showed the most considerable price decrease rate last week: 13.3%. The trend of slow decrease of onion and white cabbage prices also remained in effect. Potato prices kept on decreasing in the central regions and started falling in the eastern parts of Ukraine.

Only cucumbers and peaches increased in price last week: by 14% and 7% respectively. Apple prices decreased slightly, however producers managed to maintain the average price levels registered in the previous week.

The preliminary fruit and vegetable price forecast for the following season will be announced at the Eighth International Conference “Fruits & Vegetables of Ukraine – 2011. New Exporter”. The event will take place in conjunction with Fresh Produce Ukraine 2011 Fair which will be held at IEC, the most up-to-date exhibition center of Ukraine in Kiev, from November 30 to December 2, 2011.
