Ukrainians pay 2.5-fold less for fruits and vegetables than a year before
According to Fruit-Inform, as of early November 2011, the value of Ukrainians' fruit and vegetable basket is 2.5-fold lower year-on-year. Such a situation makes consumers happy but is rather unexpected for many farmers, who responded to the government's call to expand planted areas under vegetables and potatoes promising high profits.
“The record-breaking production of almost all traditional vegetables and potatoes keeps on exerting pressure on the market and maintaining low price levels”, Tetiana Getman, Head of Fruit-Inform, says. “Moreover, the growth of prices for potatoes and traditional vegetables should not be expected in the second half of the season notwithstanding numerous statements about such expectations. Such statements are more “dreams” than forecasts, as it will be impossible to get rid of all surplus in the market without throwing produce out”, the expert continues.
Only prices for greenhouse vegetables will be growing in the nearest time, as consumption of these products traditionally increases in the period from November to May. Fruit prices will remain relatively low thanks to availability of fruits of a new harvest from the Northern Hemisphere and abundant supply of domestic apples in Ukraine. Closer to the New Year holidays, fruits may slightly grow in price. However, the value of Ukrainians' fruit and vegetable basket will be 3-4 times lower year-on-year in the last months of the season, as we have forecast a year before.
We would remind you that the preliminary fruit and vegetable price forecast for the next season (2012/13) will be presented at the Eighth International Conference “Fruits & Vegetables of Ukraine – 2011.
