Relative stability sets in the Ukrainian fruit and vegetable market

Fruit-Inform's fruit and vegetable index shows that the value of Ukrainians' fruit and vegetable basket has not practically changed last week, after 1.9% growth a week earlier. Moreover, there were no significant price changes last week with the prices being as before 2.5-fold lower than a year before.

“The period of a relative stability has set in the Ukrainian fruit and vegetable market and will be in effect till December 20-25 this year”, Tetiana Getman, Head of Fruit-Inform, says. “Fruit prices will traditionally grow in late December; however, sellers' efforts to increase prices for traditional vegetables and potatoes are doomed to failure”, the expert continues.

In such a way, the market for traditional vegetables and potatoes kept stagnating, as Fruit-Inform had forecast. There were no reasons for the price growth in the traditional vegetable and potato segment. However, producers did not want to make price concessions, as such a policy did not lead to more active demand for their produce, as wholesalers and many consumers had already stored large quantities of these products bearing in mind a sharp growth of prices in the past season.

Fruit prices decreased by 1% last week thanks to lower prices for oranges. The decrease of greenhouse cucumber prices was compensated by higher prices for greenhouse tomatoes.

We would remind you that the preliminary Ukrainian fruit and vegetable production and price forecast for the season 2012/13 will be presented at the Eighth International Conference “Fruits & Vegetables of Ukraine – 2011. New Exporter”. This event will take place in conjunction with Fresh Produce Ukraine 2011 Fair, IEC, Kiev, Ukraine, November 30 – December 2, 2011.
