Ukraine breaks greenhouse tomato export record
According to Fruit-Inform, in 2011, Ukraine has already broken its record in greenhouse tomato exports set up two years earlier. As of late November, Ukrainian suppliers managed to export more than 76,000 tonnes of greenhouse tomatoes that is 29% higher year-on-year and 10% more than in 2009.
Exports grew thanks to further expansion of areas under modern greenhouses and enterprises' higher efficiency. Similar trends are observed in the Ukrainian greenhouse cucumber sector with record-breaking exports registered this year too.
Russia was the main importer of Ukrainian greenhouse tomatoes with the share of 85% in Ukraine's total exports of this product. The rest of greenhouse tomatoes was supplied to Belarus.
In the next season, Fruit-Inform analysts forecast further expansion of areas under greenhouse vegetables in Ukraine. At the same time, they note that greenhouse farms should broaden their export geography, as high dependance on Russia can spill over into serious problems for the Ukrainian sector.
