Ukrainian wholesalers continue to purchase vegetables for resales in spring
According to Fruit-Inform, some Ukrainian wholesale companies and entrepreneurs recommenced to purchase vegetables from producers due to low prices for vegetables and potatoes and some market experts' amateurish statements of the price growth prospects in spring.
Nevertheless, such an insignificant increase in speculators' demand led to no considerable changes in the market for traditional vegetables and potatoes, as real prices, as a rule, were lower than prices offered by producers.
Since December 2010, Fruit-Inform experts have repeatedly warned of such operations being rather risky, especially in the season 2011/12. As a result, many intermediaries purchased onions at UAH 1.50-2.50/kg (EUR 0.14-0.24/kg) during harvesting, while current prices have already fell to UAH 0.80/kg (EUR 0.08/kg) and even lower. The same situation is observed in the Ukrainian market for other traditional vegetables and potatoes suitable for storage.
