Almost threefold increase in Ukraine’s onion exports in the 1st half of 2011/12
According to Fruit-Inform, in the first 6 months of the season 2011/12, Ukraine exported three times as more onions as in the same period of the previous season. At the same time, current exports were 27% lower than in the first 6 months of the season 2009/10.
It is interesting to compare the export situation in the current season and in the season 2008/09, when the Ukrainian onion market developments were almost the same: onion prices were decreasing after harvesting that led to only active exports being able to help the market participants sell all produced quantities. The comparison shows that Ukrainian producers and wholesalers learned a lesson from that season, as Ukraine’s current onion exports grew by 11% against the first six months of the season 2008/09. At the same time, in the first half of the season 2006/07 Ukrainian companies exported three times as more onions as now. However, the situation in the EU and Russian markets was more favorable in that season.
“We expect that Ukraine’s main onion exports will be registered in the period from March to May in this season, when prices in the Russian market will be higher”, Tetiana Getman, Head of Fruit-Inform, says.
