Storage construction to slow down sharply in Ukraine

As a result of Ukrainian potato and vegetable producers' profit gap of about UAH 2.5 bln (EUR 235,3 mln) in the season 2011/12 (July-June) because of extremely low prices, the interest in storage construction will sharply decrease in the country. Such a forecast was announced by Mr. Andriy Yarmak, Author of Fruit-Inform, at the 4th International Conference “Potatoes & Vegetables of Ukraine – 2012”.

“A boom of storage construction has been observed in Ukraine in the past 2 years. This year entrepreneurs are in arrears, therefore their main task is to carry out planting and harvesting campaigns”, he was quoted as saying.

At the same time, Mr. Yarmak noted that vegetable storage construction projects would nevertheless be implemented this year, although their number will be significantly lower year-on-year.

According to Mrs. Tetiana Getman, Head of Fruit-Inform, Ukraine's necessity in vegetable storage is currently 48% satisfied. In 2013, the most part of grown vegetables will be stored in storage facilities. Mr. Yarmak explained that under “storage facilities” he meant “both state-of-the-art and adapted or reconstructed storehouses”. “These are not just hangars, or, let's say, cowsheds, but storehouses with at least ventilation, cooling equipment”, he said.
