Ukraine sets up a new record in citrus imports in 2011
According to Fruit-Inform, in 2011, Ukraine imported record-breaking volumes of oranges, mandarins and lemons. Ukrainian imports were 11% higher than in 2007 (the year of the previous record).
A recovery of orange imports should especially be mentioned, as they have been stably stagnating over the past 3 years. Last year, orange imports grew by 15%; however, they were still 8% lower than in 2007.
Mandarin imports have been stably growing with this category leading in Ukraine's total citrus imports. In 2011, mandarin imports increased again and were 26% higher than orange imports.
Lemon imports became 4% higher year-on-year in 2011, but were still 1% lower than in 2009.
Traditionally, Ukraine's main supplier of oranges in winter is Egypt with the share of 50-60% in Ukraine's total annual imports. South Africa leads in summer imports of oranges. Mandarins and lemons are imported mainly from Turkey.
