Slight increase in Ukrainian fruit and vegetable prices
Fruit-Inform's fruit and vegetable index shows that the value of Ukrainians' fruit and vegetable basket increased for the first time in March this year. However, the price growth rate was minimal and amounted to 1.5% last week. Nevertheless, in the aggregate, in March 2012, fruits and vegetables became averagely 15% less expensive in Ukraine.
“An increase in the basket's value was caused by a recovery in greenhouse vegetable prices and higher fruit prices”, Mrs. Tetiana Getman, Head of Fruit-Inform, said. “However, potatoes and traditional vegetables (onions, white cabbages, red beets, carrots) kept on decreasing in price despite about 2 months left till the end of the season”, the expert continued.
Lower prices of traditional vegetables and potatoes force many producers to reduce their production plans, as they cannot obtain even minimal funds for their sowing campaign.
