Ukrainian strawberry season starts

According to Fruit-Inform, the strawberry season started in Ukraine last week with producers having to reduce prices already in several days after the start. Strawberry harvesting began only in some heated greenhouses in the southern regions of Ukraine (mainly in Crimea). First strawberries were sold at UAH 60-65/kg (EUR 5.73-6.21/kg). However, due to high competition with imported produce, farmers had to reduce prices to UAH 50-55/kg (EUR 4.77-5.25/kg).

Producers think that prices will keep on decreasing in the nearest time, as enough quantities of relatively inexpensive strawberries imported from Greece and Spain are available in the market at prices varying between UAH 25-35/kg (EUR 2.39-3.34/kg). Russia being a rather attractive target market for big Ukrainian suppliers negatively affects prices too. However, for the present, the Russian market is not very favorable for Ukrainian produce, as local wholesale companies work with the EU suppliers more willingly thanks to their prices being 30-40% lower than Ukrainian ones.

We would remind you that the Ukrainian strawberry production and price forecast will be presented at the 3rd International Conference “Berries of Ukraine – 2012: Frozen Produce & Fresh Market” that will take place at Stolychnyi Agricultural Center, Kiev, Ukraine, May 24-25, 2012.

Registration of the conference participants has already started. To join about 150 delegates from 9-11 countries of the world, please, fill out an application form available here.
