Winter crops will survive the current frosts unharmed

"As of the current moment the frosts are absolutely harmless for winter crops, as all over the territory of Ukraine they are protected by snow cover", the Head of Agro-Meteorological Department at the Ukrainian Centre for Hydro-Meteorology Tetyana Adamenko has told APK-Inform.

She said that in none of the Ukrainian regions the soil temperature at the tillering node depth has approached the critical value. According to the weather centre, this temperature has averaged 3 to 5 degrees below zero and the lowest one was registered in one of the north-western regions - 9 degrees below zero, while the critical temperature is considered to be 14 to 15 degrees below zero.

Commenting on the weather situation and the state of crops, the Deputy Agriculture Minister Vasyl Soroka has said that there is no point for concern. He said 60 percent of winter cereals as of the current moment were in food state and 30 percent - in fair one.

The weather centre has been forecasting successful survival of 90-95 percent of winter crops.
