Ukraine: decrease in fruit and vegetable prices slows down
Fruit-Inform's fresh produce index shows a continuing seasonal decrease in fruit and vegetable prices that became 1% lower in Ukraine last week. In such a way, fruits and vegetables have become 4.1% less expensive in August.
“A decrease in fruit and vegetable prices somewhat slowed down due to prices having already reached critically low levels in the segments of almost all traditional vegetables, seasonal vegetables and potatoes”, Mr. Andriy Yarmak, Author of Fruit-Inform Project, said. “Current prices of potatoes are more than half as high year-on-year; onion prices fell almost 2 times; cucumbers are 20% less expensive; prices of tomatoes, red beets and carrots are 15% lower compared with last year. Only white cabbages are 3 times more expensive”, the expert continued.
It should be noted that fruit prices are averagely higher year-on-year despite a seasonal decrease in them. In particular, last week, watermelons grew in price because of dry and hot weather that negatively affected watermelon yields but had a positive impact on eating qualities.
In addition, last week Ukrainian producers started concluding apple export contracts with Russian purchasers. Some Russian producers from central regions having apple supply contracts with wholesalers and supermarket chains expect a significant decrease in yields, therefore they have to seek for opportunities of execution of contracts by importing apples from Ukraine.
