Ukrainian and Russian farmers to be forced to grow apples of European quality

Ukrainian and Russian apple producers have no other alternative but to raise the quality of their produce to European level, Mrs. Tetiana Getman, Head of Fruit-Inform, said at the 2nd International Conference “Apple Business of Ukraine & Russia – 2012”.

The expert also noted that Ukrainian farmers had already faced a necessity of improving quality standards five years ago when the country entered into the WTO. After that, Ukrainian farmers started mastering exports to Russia, the country that is the most important purchaser of apples from Ukraine. However, in August MY 2012/13, Russia will become a full member of the WTO that means significant changes in the alignment of forces in that market.

“Such an opportunity will be immediately taken by European producers, as the Russian market is a long-awaited dream for them”, Mrs. Getman said. “This means that Russia will import more high-quality and inexpensive apples from the EU. In such a way, price will become the main criterion in apple sales in the nearest time, therefore Ukrainian and Russian farmers will have both to improve quality of produce and be ready to reduce its prices”, the expert added.

We would remind you that the fundamental study “Apples of Ukraine & Russia – 2012: Present Situation and Prospects in Growing, Storage, Handling, Processing and Marketing” will be available since September this year.
