Russia: drought to lead to lower potato production in Novosibirsk region

Novosibirsk producers expect a decrease in potato production this year compared with the previous one.

Drought weather over the past 2 months and a half led to significant changes in harvest estimates. For the present, only some farms started harvesting campaign; however, preliminary forecasts are disappointing: both yields and quality of potatoes will be lower year-on-year. Farmers say that the situation will not be saved even by rains.

Meantime, potato prices in the region have decreased to RUB 10-15/kg (EUR 0.25-0.37/kg) but nevertheless are 2-2.5 times higher year-on-year.

We would remind you that in 2011 Novosibirsk producers harvested almost 620,000 tonnes of potatoes that was 15% higher than in harvestless 2010.

More detailed information about Russian potato production, price and import prospects will be presented at the 5th International Conference "Fruit & Vegetable Business of Russia – 2012" that will be held in conjunction with World Food Moscow, September 18, 2012. Special attention will be given to the impact of Russia's accession to the WTO on the foreign trade in fruits and vegetables.
