Ukraine sets new record in tomato exports
Despite the previous year having turned out to be rather difficult for Ukrainian growers of greenhouse tomatoes, exports in the MY 2012 hit all time high over all history of independent Ukraine, according to Fruit-Inform.
A further increase in prices of energy resources in 2012 negatively affected the Ukrainian greenhouse business. In such a way, exports turned out to be a sort of salvation for the greenhouse farms, as exporters' purchasing prices were 15-20% higher than ones offered by internal wholesalers over the season.
In total, Ukraine exported more than 90,000 tonnes of tomatoes in the MY 2012 that was 17% better year-on-year and twice as many as average over the past 5 years.
Russia was the main importer of Ukrainian tomatoes with the share of 84% in Ukraine's total exports. Moreover, Ukraine quadrupled exports to Belarus in the MY 2012.
