Ukraine: berry export earnings to exceed apple ones soon
Ukrainian apple export earnings in the first 7 months of the season (from July 2012 to January 2013) stood at $4.8 mln, the lowest result in the past 5 years. At the same time, export earnings from berries and stonefruits amounted to $3.8 mln, while export volumes of these fruits still were relatively moderate.
“Investors' interest in the berry sector is heightened now, as this segment of the fruit and vegetable business is still undersaturated. Furthermore, these products are in rather great demand in the external market, which is indicated by actively growing exports of strawberries, sweet cherries and other softfruit categories in 2012”, says Ms. Tetiana Getman, Head of Fruit-Inform. “At the same time, the investment growth rates in certain segments of the berry market cause some concern in view of even growers of traditional vegetables considering a possibility of diversification of their activities by switching over to growing berry and stonefruit crops”.
According to Ms. Getman's opinion, in two-three years, thanks to higher prices of soft fruits, their exports will bring more earnings than exports of apples, the fruits which production continues to grow. Moreover, Ukraine is able to start the season 2-3 weeks earlier than Russia and ship soft fruits to this market at higher prices. At the same time, apple production will be more focused on the internal market, and growth in the apple export volumes will be followed by a negative trend in the export values.
