An increase of 63.2% in Ukrainian fresh produce price index over three weeks

Fruit-Inform's Ukrainian fresh produce price index grew by 16.1% last week, after an increase of 19.3% a week earlier. In such a way, fruits and vegetables have become averagely 63.2% more expensive in Ukraine over the past 3 weeks. Prices of traditional vegetables (onions, white cabbage, beetroots, carrots) and potatoes have doubled over this period.

As at April 12, 2013, the Ukrainian fresh produce price index was 114% higher year-on-year. For comparison: over the same three weeks of 2012, fruits and vegetables became averagely 2.7% less expensive, and prices of traditional vegetables and potatoes decreased by 25%.

“Despite a rather rapid increase in fresh produce price index in Ukraine, prices of traditional vegetables and potatoes remain one of the lowest in Europe. Thanks to relatively low price levels, exports of those categories are rather active now, which, in its turn, stimulates an increase in prices in the country”, says Ms. Tetiana Getman, Head of Fruit-Inform. “It should also be noted that prices of traditional vegetables and potatoes have been extremely low over the past 2 seasons preventing Ukrainian farmers from defraying produce production and storage expenses until their growth in the beginning of March 2013”.

Traditional vegetables led in the price growth last week and became a third more expensive. Potato prices grew averagely by 20.4%. Prices of greenhouse vegetables went up by 5.3%. Apples became 16.7% more expensive. At the same time, banana prices kept on decreasing in Ukraine and fell by 3.4%.
