Fruit and vegetable prices continue to fall in Ukraine
Fruit-Inform's Ukrainian fresh produce price index shows a further decrease in fruit and vegetable prices in the country last week.
In the period from 18th to 24th May, the price index became 13.2% lower after a decrease of 10.1% in the first half of the month. In such a way, fruits and vegetables have become almost a quarter less expensive in May.
“Despite higher prices of greenhouse cucumbers due to worse weather conditions, which had led to lower outputs, and an increase in exports to Russia, other fruit and vegetable categories decreased in price”, says Ms. Tetiana Getman, Head of Fruit-Inform. “Unfortunately, as in the previous season, Ukrainian growers did not manage to sell all stocks of potatoes and traditional vegetables, therefore they had to reduce selling prices in view of a rapid increase in the supply of early produce. The sharpest decrease in prices was registered in the potato segment: last year's potatoes became averagely 15-25% less expensive”.
The season of tomatoes grown in summer greenhouses and early onions also started last week. However, it is too early for those crops to significantly influence the market situation due to relatively low outputs for the present.
Strawberries became 23.5% less expensive last week. Banana prices kept on decreasing too. In such a way, the fruit price index became 9.2% lower.
