Ukrainian potato growers satisfied with record high prices
According to Fruit-Inform, Ukrainian growers of early and middle-season potatoes are satisfied with prices for their produce, which, for the present, exceed all optimistic expectations: current potato price levels are record high for the middle of July.
“Current wholesale prices of potatoes average UAH 3.50/kg (EUR 0.34/kg). A week ago, they even exceeded UAH 4/kg (EUR 0.38/kg), the highest level for this period ever”, says Ms Tetiana Getman, Head of Fruit-Inform. “Two seasons of low prices for ware potatoes led to significantly lower number of farmers interested in growing this crop. Furthermore, the price level of UAH 1/kg (EUR 0.10/kg) in July last year negatively affected a number of those interested in growing early and middle-season potatoes”.
Current prices are 3-4 times higher compared with the previous season and 40% higher compared with price levels in July 2011 (previous record). Average potato price in the mid-July over the past 9 seasons amounted to UAH 1.58/kg (EUR 0.15/kg), therefore current price levels are at least three times higher.
