Georgia strengthens presence in global hazelnut market
Low hazelnut production in Turkey favored the Georgian hazelnut industry. According to Mr. Mamuka Todua, Chairman of Hazelnut Exporters Union, growers from Turkey, accounting for 80% in the global hazelnut market, expect relatively small harvest this year.
The demand for Georgian hazelnuts is rather high, he said. Furthermore, low production in Turkey will lead to more active sales of Georgian produce. Mr. Todua also said that small harvest in Turkey has already impacted prices of Georgian hazelnuts.
Current prices have already gone up to $6/kg, while last year export price levels averaged $5/kg.
For the present, Georgian hazelnuts are exported to about 40 European and Asian countries.
