Ukraine: prices of vegetables and potatoes still significantly higher than in 2012
Fruit-Inform's Ukrainian fresh produce price index shows that prices of potatoes and traditional vegetables (onions, white cabbage, beetroots, carrots) are significantly higher than in 2012. In such a way, the prices have been higher year-on-year within the whole year 2013 despite a sharp seasonal decrease in them.
“Current wholesale prices of potatoes are 51.6% higher than in the end of August 2012, and average wholesale prices of traditional vegetables have grown by 18.8% year-on-year”, Ms. Tetiana Getman, Head of Fruit-Inform. “At the same time, the price behavior is different for traditional vegetables: beetroots, carrots and onions are averagely 60% more expensive year-on-year, while white cabbage prices have fallen by 40%”.
The market experts connect higher prices in 2013 with low comparison base (last year potatoes and traditional vegetables were sold at a loss) and expect the situation to change already in October-November 2013.
