Sharp rise in Ukrainian fresh produce price index

Fruit-Inform's Ukrainian fresh produce price index shows a sharp increase in fruit and vegetable prices last week. In the period from August 31 to September 6, the fresh produce price index jumped by 15% in Ukraine, after a slight increase of 0.8% a week earlier. In addition, in early September 2013, prices of fruits and vegetables were averagely a third higher year-on-year.

“Last week, a sharp increase in prices was registered in the segments of traditional vegetables and potatoes. Field-grown tomatoes also became more expensive due to bad weather conditions impeding harvesting”, says Ms. Tetiana Getman, Head of Fruit-Inform. “At the same time, fruit prices changed slightly week-on-week, except prices of grapes, which decreased due to higher imports of Turkish produce”.

Having grown in price by 44%, onions unexpectedly turned out to be the most expensive product among traditional vegetables. The lowest prices were registered in the segment of white cabbage, which, nevertheless, also grew in price significantly. The price growth led to almost full stop of exports of traditional vegetables to Russia, as their price levels in Ukraine had exceeded those in Russia.
