Ukrainian potato and vegetable growers to leave a part of crop in fields

According to Fruit-Inform, Ukrainian growers managed to recommence harvesting of potatoes and traditional vegetables thanks to better weather conditions in the country. However, unfortunately, some growers discovered that it had been already late to harvest and took a decision to leave the crop in the fields.

The situation is especially difficult in the central regions, where the September precipitation level was 4-5 times of the mean annual rainfall. Growers of onions and potatoes faced the most serious troubles in those regions. Onions sprouted and bulbs fully lost their marketable state in many cases. In such a way, even taking into account currently high price levels, farmers often decided to leave produce in the fields. Naturally, if farmers managed to harvest those onions, they had to sell them right after harvesting as they turned out to be fully unstorable.

We would remind you that more detailed information about the Ukrainian fruit and vegetable market developments will be presented at the 10th Anniversary International Conference “Fruits & Vegetables of Ukraine-2013”, November 26-28, 2013, International Exhibition Center, Kiev, Ukraine.
