Production of winter onions expected to grow in Ukraine
The Ukrainian market participants expect production of winter onions to be record high in the country.
Taking into account rather high prices of onions in the end of the previous season, Ukrainian farmers have significantly expanded areas under this crop this year, which may lead to a considerable increase in production volumes. Seed companies also agree with such forecasts. Sales of seeds were 1.5-2 times of sales in 2012, according to their data.
At the same time, production of winter onions may be negatively affected by weather conditions. Mr. Vadim Dudka, Director of Agroanaliz, says that abnormally warm January has already resulted in plants “waking up”. If warm weather changes into frosts, it may negatively affect the crop.
Low temperature (15 degrees below zero and higher) is not fatal for winter onions under conditions of no snow cover. However, lack of snowfall and lower temperatures may ruin the crop.
“In this case, a sharp fall from above-zero temperature to 17-20 degrees below zero within two-three days will be crucial for the winter onion crop if no snowfall is registered”, says Mr. Dudka.
Taking into account significant expansion of areas under winter onions in Ukraine, Fruit-Inform experts expect a significant increase in their production if there are no weather surprises. We would remind you that one of such surprises was registered in late March 2013, when a sharp decrease in temperature coincided with an active vegetative stage of winter onions.
We would remind you that more detailed information about the current state and future developments in the Ukrainian and Russian market for potatoes and vegetables will be presented at the 6th International Conference “Potatoes & Vegetables of Ukraine-2014”, which will be held on February 20, 2014, President Hotel, Kiev, Ukraine.
