Ukraine: fresh produce price index slightly up

Fruit-Inform Ukrainian fresh produce price index grew by 0.1% in the week from February 21st to 28th, after an increase of 1.2% a week before. In such a way, the price index has become 11.8% higher over the past 6 weeks.

“The Ukrainian fruit and vegetable market was characterized by bidirectional price performance last week: on the one hand, imported produce kept on becoming more expensive due to lower Ukrainian hryvnia exchange rate; on the other hand, the demand for fruits and vegetables has significantly gone down due to their higher prices, which made traders reduce them”, says Ms. Tetiana Getman, Head of Fruit-Inform. “Under conditions of political and economical instability in Ukraine, further price performance may be rather unpredictable and will depend on currency exchange rates and internal demand”.

The sharpest increase in prices was registered in the citrus segment. Oranges became 20% more expensive, mandarin prices went up by 15.4%, and lemons grew in price by 7.7%. Prices of cucumbers and tomatoes decreased by 1-5% in the majority of cases, and traditional vegetables (onions, carrots, table beets, white cabbage) became averagely 0.3% less expensive.
