Polish apple market on the verge of supply glut

Political crisis in Ukraine and conflict with the Russian Federation provoked a significant decrease in Polish apple exports to those countries.

“Those growers that managed to finish their apple sales campaign before the start of 2014 or in early January (before Maidan events) can consider themselves rather lucky”, Polish producers comment. “For the present, the demand for Polish apples in Russia and Ukraine is extremely low”.

Growers also say that Russian importers consider prices of Polish produce uncompetitive in the Russian market due to devaluation of the national currency in Russia.

“For the present, Polish growers and wholesale companies fear blocking of fruit and vegetable shipments to Russia”, the market participants say. “In view of that, we demand from the government to use best efforts to smooth down negative consequences for the Polish growers”.
