Ukraine: growers may lose up to 90% of sweet cherry crop due to April cold spell

According to Fruit-Inform, Ukrainian growers are still evaluating their losses of sweet cherry crop due to a cold spell last week.

Unfavorable weather conditions had an especially serious impact on sweet cherry orchards in the southern regions of the country, where temperature fell to 7 degrees below zero at night last week. Growers estimate their losses at about 50-90% due to a cold spell.

“Some farms have faced disastrous losses that total 90% of the sweet cherry crop sometimes”, a grower comments. “However, damages are less significant in the majority of cases. For the present, sweet cherry trees are still budding in most regions of Ukraine with blossoming to start only in the end of the next week”.

A grower expects sweet cherry production to go down compared with the previous forecast. Furthermore, farmers fear another cold spell that might be fatal for the rest of the crop.

“We are still evaluating our crop losses with final estimation to be available in about two weeks at least, when sweet cherries will finish blossoming”, a grower continues. “However, if there is another cold spell, there will be practically nothing to calculate”.
