Ukraine: lower strawberry production expected in southern regions due to cold spell

It is still too early to count losses of the strawberry crop from an April cold spell in Ukraine. However, farmers from the southern regions have already said about a decrease expected in strawberry production compared with the previous forecast.

A cold spell had a specially negative impact on strawberry plantations in the southern regions of the country. Growers had removed covering material from plants about ten days ago due to an early and rather sharp increase in temperature, therefore strawberry leaves suffered from a cold spell. Farmers also said that some plants had already started budding before a cold spell that made them more sensitive to sharp temperature fluctuations.

“Temperature fell to 8 degrees below zero in our regions at night”, says a farmer from a southern region of Ukraine. “Plants are rather fragile after those weather conditions that would most likely lead to significantly lower yields of strawberries compared with last year”.

Damages to strawberry plantations in other regions of Ukraine are insignificant. Farmers hope that there will be no weather surprises by the mid-May, and strawberry production will be at the last year's level.

More detailed information about the Ukrainian strawberry market developments and outlook will be presented at the 5th International Conference “Berries of Ukraine-2014: Frozen Produce & Fresh Market” which is to take place on May 22-23, 2014, Feride Plaza, Vinnytsia, Ukraine.
