Ukrainian fresh produce price index down again

Fruit-Inform Ukrainian fresh produce price index went down by 1.5% in the week from June 14th to 20th, after a decrease of 2.1% a week before and a fall of 7.7% two weeks before. Thus, the negative price trend slowed down in Ukraine due to abnormally cold and rainy weather registered in the majority of the regions.

«As a rule, fruit and vegetable prices are rapidly going down in the mid-June under the influence of a sharp increase in the supply of early field-grown and hothouse produce. However, this year, due to unfavorable weather conditions, the price decrease rates are half as high as last year», says Ms. Tetiana Getman, Head of Fruit-Inform. «A decrease in the fresh produce price index was registered last week thanks to lower prices of greenhouse tomatoes, raspberries and white cabbage. However, at the same time, early potatoes, cucumbers and strawberries became more expensive».

It should also be noted that it is June when Ukrainians' expenditures for berries are the highest, therefore any fluctuations in berry prices seriously reflect on the fresh produce price index. In the end of June, Ukrainian consumers will buy more early potatoes and vegetables, which consumption peaks in July-August.
