Further decrease in Ukrainian fresh produce price index
Fruit-Inform Ukrainian fresh produce price index went down by 3.1% in the week from September 15th to 21st, after a decrease of 3.7% a week before. Thus, the price index has become almost 12.5% lower over the past three weeks, while in the same period of the previous season it went up by 20.9%.
“Ukrainian farmers purchase the majority of inputs and equipment for fruit and vegetable growing in foreign countries, therefore their prices are pegged to the US dollar and euro exchange rates, while grown produce is sold in the internal market at prices in the Ukrainian hryvnia, which are currently extremely low”, says Ms. Tetiana Getman, Head of Fruit-Inform. “Such a situation poses a threat of shortage of production already in the following season, when farmers will simply have no funds for their sowing campaign”.
Last week traditional vegetables became 10.9% less expensive, potato prices went down by 5.7%, prices of seasonal and greenhouse vegetables decreased by 3.4%, while fruits became 3.7% more expensive due to higher prices of imported produce.
