Ukraine's stonefruit imports up by a third in August
According to Fruit-Inform, Ukraine has raised stonefruit imports by a third in August 2014 compared with the same month of the previous year. The import volumes totaled 14,000 tons. Ukraine's cumulative imports of stonefruits in June-August 2014 amounted to 45,000 tons, also an increase of a third year-on-year.
The EU was the leader in exports of stonefruits to Ukraine this summer with the share of about 90% in Ukraine's total imports. Compared with the same period of the previous season, the EU countries expanded their presence in the Ukrainian market by about a half. Furthermore, Ukraine's imports could have been even higher if not the devaluation of the Ukrainian hryvnia and Ukrainians' lower paying capacity.
Moreover, an increase in stonefruit imports was registered also thanks to lower domestic production of those fruits in Ukraine due to spring frosts. According to Fruit-Inform, many farms from the southern regions of Ukraine and Crimea reported of almost full loss of the peach and cherry plum crops. Losses of the sour cherry crop often stood at 50% in farms from the southern regions. The lowest losses were reported by plum growers (up to 30%).
Due to a decrease in domestic production, Ukraine has also lowered its presence in the Russian stonefruit market: Ukraine's stonefruit exports to the Russian Federation in June-August 2014 took just a third of the export volumes in the same period of the previous season.
More detailed information about the Ukrainian market for stonefruits and other fruit and vegetable products will be presented at the 11th International Conference «Fruits & Vegetables of Ukraine-2014», which is going to be held on December 8-9 in Kiev. The conference will be followed by the 4th International Trade Forum with about 30 Ukrainian retail chains and importers ready to conduct negotiations with fruit and vegetable suppliers on December 10.
