Ukraine: Donetsk and Luhansk farmers face problems with fruit and vegetable sales
Farmers from Donetsk and Luhansk Regions of Ukraine say of serious problems with sales of their fruits and vegetables. According to Fruit-Inform, only some growers from the eastern regions of the country are currently able to sell their produce at local wholesale markets. For example, producers from Mariupol Disctrict sell all their volumes at Mariupol Wholesale Market and say of rather high demand for their produce as many supermarkets are close in the city due to military operations.
However, a number of those farmers is not so high. Other farms (located in the anti-terrorist operation zone) have practically lost their sales market. Transport companies simply deny taking produce out from farms due to ongoing warfare in the regions. Furthermore, growers face problems during produce transportation beyond the anti-terrorist operation zone. According to farmers, gunmen at security road blocks of the so-called Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics demand a permission of produce delivery to other regions issued by the self-appointed authorities.
It should also be noted that the production volumes of fruits, vegetables and potatoes will significantly go down in the eastern regions compared with the previous year. Local farmers often say of irregular supply of water and electricity due to the anti-terrorist operation. As a result, irrigation problems led to a considerable decrease in yields. Furthermore, a lot of fields and storage facilities seriously suffered from military operations.
More detailed information about the Ukrainian fruit and vegetable market trends will be presented at the 11th International Conference «Fruits & Vegetables of Ukraine-2014», which is going to be held on December 8-9 in Kiev. The conference will be followed by the 4th International Trade Forum with about 30 Ukrainian retail chains and importers ready to conduct negotiations with fruit and vegetable suppliers on December 10.
