Peru leads in vegetable exports to Russia among Latin American countries
Peru is the largest exporter of fruits and vegetables to the Russian Federation among Latin American countries, according to the Peruvian Agricultural Producers Association's statement.
Russia's decision to ban food imports from the USA and EU offered such countries as Peru a chance to increase their exports.
«The situation enabled Peru to develop exports of high-quality products, and now we are considered as the leading supplier of high-quality fruits and vegetables. The growth stands at about $10 mln per year, and exports can continue rising thanks to a significant increase in the demand», said Mrs. Anna Maria Deustua, Director of the Association.
In August Russia introduced a one-year ban on imports of foodstuffs from countries that had placed sanctions on the Russian Federation: the USA, the EU countries, Canada, Australia and Norway. The measure impacts the meat, fish, fruit, vegetable and dairy industries.
According to Mrs. Deustua, Peruvian fresh fruit exports to Russia have grown by 16% in January-June 2014 and are expected to reach $80 mln by the end of the year.
She also added that Peru's exports to Russia had been almost equal to zero just 5 years ago and grew from $1 mln in the beginning of exports to $53 mln in 2013.
