Poland: white cabbage prices halve year-on-year
Polish farmers had to almost halve white cabbage prices compared with the same period of the previous season.
According to Fruit-Inform, for the present, growers now offer white cabbage at 0.05-0.11 euro/kg, while in early November 2013 prices varied between 0.12-0.16 euro/kg.
Farmers are seriously concerned about current situation. The supply of produce has been just growing in the Polish market due to high domestic production. According to Eurostat data, areas under white cabbage expanded by more than 10% in 2014 after record high prices in the previous season.
Current prices have almost reached the price levels of November 2012, when white cabbage was sold at 0.06-0.09 euro/kg in Poland. Lower prices were registered just in November 2011, when they had fallen to record low level of 0.03-0.05 euro/kg.
It should also be noted that Russia's ban has not affected the Polish white cabbage sector so far, as Polish exports to Russia usually grew in the second half of winter.
We would remind you that Polish farmers managed to raise white cabbage prices in the previous season thanks to active exports to the Eastern European countries with Russia and Ukraine as major importers.
More detailed information about the Eastern European fruit and vegetable market developments will be presented at the 11th International Conference «Fruits & Vegetables of Ukraine-2014», which is going to be held on December 8-9 in Kiev. The conference will be followed by the 4th International Trade Forum with about 30 Ukrainian retail chains and importers ready to conduct negotiations with fruit and vegetable suppliers on December 10.
