Ukraine: pear prices up in Kiev

The Ukrainian market participants say of a rapid increase in pear prices at Stolychnyi Wholesale Market, Kiev.

For the present, sellers are ready to sell pears at UAH 21-31/kg (EUR 1.10-1.63/kg), while a week before prices were no higher than UAH 18/kg (EUR 0.94/kg). Growth has been registered due to a decrease in the supply of pears in Ukraine. The majority of farmers are not interested in sales of late pears now and keep them in storage in the hope of a further increase in prices. The supply of imported pears is also limited now. Importers do not risk raising imports in view of instability in the Ukrainian currency market, as, taking into account the exchange level of Ukrainian hryvnia after its devaluation, imported pears are uncompetitive in price with domestic produce in Ukraine.

Moreover, current pear prices registered at Stolychnyi Wholesale Market are twice as high as observed in the same period of the previous year.
