Russia: retail sales of canned vegetables down in 2009-2013
According to the sector experts' data, the sales of canned vegetables in Russia totaled 0.98 mln tons in 2013, a decrease of 6% compared with 2009.
The largest part of canned vegetables was sold through retail chains in 2009-2013 with their share in all sales channels standing at 73%. State procurement accounted to 12%, sales to industrial processors stood at 11%, and the rest was sold through HoReCa enterprises.
The retail sales of canned vegetables have gone down by 5% to 698,000 tons within 2009-2013. The maximal decrease in the retail sales was observed in 2010: down by 10%. Then, in 2011-2013, the market recovered, but sales were unable to reach the 2009 levels.
Canned tomatoes were the most popular category among canned vegetables and accounted for about 22% of the retail sales within 2009-2013. Canned peas and beans ranked second (about 18% of the retail sales), and canned cucumbers were the third most popular product with the share of 15%.
