Moldovan apple growers unsatisfied with Romanian importers' prices

Moldovan apple growers are unsatisfied with purchase prices fixed by Romanian importers, which are ready to buy apples at $0.18-0.22/kg. We would remind you that export prices of Moldovan apples shipped to Romania last year were at least 30% higher.

At the same time, some growers agree to those conditions as they have no better alternative due to the ban on imports introduced by Russia.

The Russian Federation was the main export market for Moldovan growers before 2014 with the import volumes annually totaling about 170,000 tons. In general, the Russian market consumed the largest part of the Moldovan total apple crop. Meanwhile, Romania's share in Moldova's total apple exports was not high, and imports annually totaled 4,000-5,000 tons.

Despite the free trade agreement, Moldova face serious problems with expanding its presence in the EU apple market due to high competition there under conditions of Russia's ban.
