Ukraine: fresh produce prices up last week
Fruit-Inform Ukrainian fresh produce price index went up by 7.8% in the week from February 28th to 6th, after an increase of 3.9% a week before.
«The devaluation of the Ukrainian hryvnia has changed into sharp appreciation last week; however, the market was under the influence of seasonal factors, which backed the price growth», says Ms. Tetiana Getman, Head of Fruit-Inform. «Appreciation of the Ukrainian hryvnia exchange rates has resulted in a fall of prices for imported fruits; however, traditional vegetables, potatoes and greenhouse vegetables became more expensive due to various reasons».
Prices of potatoes, table beets and carrots went up thanks to a decrease in the supply of high-quality produce and more active demand. White cabbage prices have also grown for the first time over the past few months.
Greenhouse vegetables became more expensive thanks to higher exports of Ukrainian cucumbers to the EU and other countries. At the same time, an increase in prices of greenhouse tomatoes was connected with unsatisfactory supply due to Ukrainian importers' cautious purchasing policy.
Fruit prices went down by 5.5% thanks to the revaluation of the Ukrainian hryvnia and despite an increase in prices for apples (the main fruit category now in Ukraine). The market participants also said of more active imports of Polish apples and a decrease in the supply of high-quality domestic apples in the market.
