Poland loses status of Ukraine’s top supplier of pears, Netherlands become the leader
Poland has significantly reduced pear exports to Ukraine in the current season.
According to the official statistics, Poland shipped just 862 tons of pears to Ukraine in July 2014 – March 2015, a fall of 71% compared with the same period of the previous season. We would remind you that Polish pear exports to Ukraine reached almost 3,000 tons in the first 9 months of the past season, which enabled Poland to become the top supplier of those fruits to Ukraine. As regards the current season, Poland ranks just second, while the Netherlands became the leader.
A fall in pear exports to Ukraine is connected with lower production of pears in Poland. According to WAPA data, Polish growers harvested just 50,000 tons of pears in the season 2014/15, a decrease of 23% year-on-year and 9% lower than average over the past 5 years.
It should also be noted that Ukraine has halved its pear imports since the beginning of this season due to the devaluation of the national currency resulted in a sharp rise in prices of imported produce.
