Prices of Ukrainian strawberries halve week-on-week

Prices of Ukrainian strawberries have halved week-on-week in Ukraine, according to Fruit-Inform. Growers report of more active harvesting, which favors a steady increase in supply, and sellers at wholesale markets have to reduce their prices several times a day.

Now farmers are ready to ship strawberries at UAH 60-70/kg (EUR 2.59-3.02/kg) against UAH 100-130/kg (EUR 4.31-5.60/kg) in the beginning of the previous week.

For the present, strawberry harvesting campaign has been started by summer greenhouses from the southern regions and Zakarpattia Oblast as well as growers growing strawberries under cover. Harvesting of field-grown berries is to start after May 20.

A decrease in strawberry prices is traditionally registered in the first half of May. According to Fruit-Inform, strawberry prices usually fell to UAH 15-18/kg in the mid-May in at least past three seasons and reached their low of UAH 10-12/kg in late June.

The Ukrainian strawberry season 2015 is characterized by lack of competition with imports and late start of harvesting field-grown strawberries. At the same time, Ukrainian growers stand a good chance to raise exports to Russia through Crimea. More detailed information about the Ukrainian berry market developments and outlook will be presented at the 6th International Conference «Berries of Ukraine-2015: Frozen Produce & Fresh Market». The conference will be held on May 21-22, 2015, Kiev, Ukraine.
