Crimea, Ukraine: prices of greenhouse strawberries down
Crimean farmers are forced to daily reduce their prices of greenhouse strawberries. According to Fruit-Inform price monitoring, those berries have already become 22-26% less expensive since the beginning of this week.
Now growers ship strawberries at RUB 200-250/kg (EUR 3.50-4.37/kg), while a week before prices were not lower than RUB 270/kg (EUR 4.72/kg).
Negative trend in pricing is registered in view of a seasonal increase in strawberry supply in Crimea. Prices are also under pressure of availability of less expensive strawberries shipped from mainland Ukraine, which are offered at RUB 180/kg (EUR 3.15/kg) in Crimea.
Strawberry prices have also sharply gone down at Krymskiy Privoz Wholesale Market, Simferopol, Crimea. Now local strawberries are sold at RUB 240-280/kg (EUR 4.20-4.90/kg) there, a fall of 40% week-on-week. Ukrainian berries are offered at RUB 200-220/kg (EUR 3.50-3.85/kg), a decrease of 17-22% compared with a week before.
It should also be noted that current prices of local strawberries in Crimea are at least 60% higher year-on-year. At the same time, the majority of growers expect negative price trend to only intensify in the end of May, when field-grown berries are to arrive in the market.
More detailed information about the Ukrainian berry market developments and outlook will be presented at the 6th International Conference «Berries of Ukraine-2015: Frozen Produce & Fresh Market». The conference will be held on May 21-22, 2015, Kiev, Ukraine.
