Ukraine: export prices of strawberries significantly higher than internal market ones
Strawberry prices are currently actively growing in Ukraine, which is traditionally observed in July due to a gradual decrease in supply. It should be noted that positive trend is now especially registered in strawberry export prices, while the internal market ones have been growing slightly.
«We have lost up to 30% of our berry crops due to drought weather in June», Mr. Aleksandr Tkachuk, Director at Agrofirma Vesna-2011, comments. «Now we try to compensate those losses by higher prices, therefore prefer sales for export. Internal market operators are not ready to pay more than UAH 18-20/kg (EUR 0.73-0.81/kg) for high-quality berries, while Crimean middlemen purchase export-quality produce at UAH 30-35/kg (EUR 1.21-1.41/kg)».
It should be noted that Fruit-Inform analysts have already forecasted at least 100% difference between export and internal market prices for strawberries during their harvesting peak at the 6th International Conference «Berries of Ukraine-2015: Frozen Produce & Fresh Market» in late May. According to Fruit-Inform data, strawberries are now sold at UAH 16-18/kg (EUR 0.64-0.73/kg) in Ukraine, while prices of premium-quality berries have already reached UAH 35-40/kg (EUR 1.41-1.61/kg).
