Ukraine: fruit and vegetable prices up last week
For the first time over long period of negative trend, Fruit-Inform Ukrainian fresh produce price index has grown in the week from August 8th to 14th thanks to an inter-season period in the market.
«End of harvesting of some early and middle-season crops often results in an increase in their prices. However, it should be noted that the start of an inter-season period has been registered 7-10 days later than usual in Ukraine this year», says Ms. Tetiana Getman, Head of Fruit-Inform. «The largest contribution to growth in the price index was made by cucumbers due to an increase of 27.3% in their prices observed in view of lower supply and higher demand for Ukrainian produce in Poland».
It should also be noted that the price index of traditional vegetables also has grown for the first time over summer 2015. A decline in prices of carrots and red beets was unable to compensate growth in onion and white cabbage prices. Potatoes also became more expensive as growers have not started harvesting late varieties yet.
Meanwhile, the fresh fruit price index went down by 4.5% thanks to a decrease in prices of watermelons, plums and grapes, while prices of other fruits were stable.
