Moldovan apple production to reach 5-year low
According to WAPA preliminary data, Moldova will face a sharp fall in apple production in the season 2015/16: it is expected to reach 5-year low.
Moldovan growers will harvest just 250,000 tons, a fall of 41% year-on-year. We would remind you that Moldovan apple production reached record high 420,000 tons a year before.
Production is expected to fall due to negative weather conditions. Apple orchards have seriously suffered from drought in the end of the previous year and lack of rainfall during fruit setting. Moreover, weather conditions were rather cold during blossoming period and negatively affected pollination.
At the same time, Moldova-Fruct Assocation is more optimistic. Mr. Iurie Fala, Director of Moldova-Fruct, believes that a fall in apple yields due to unfavorable weather conditions may be compensated by new intensive orchards coming into bearing.
