Potato prices sharply up in Crimea, Ukraine
Prices of local potatoes have grown by 50% in Crimea, Ukraine, over the past weekend, according to Fruit-Inform.
Now prices vary between RUB 20-30/kg (USD 0.27-0.41/kg), depending on variety and quality, at Krymskiy Privoz Wholesale Market, Simferopol. For comparison, prices did not exceed RUB 20/kg (EUR 0.27/kg) in the end of the previous week.
A sharp rise in prices is connected with high demand for potatoes shown by local wholesalers, which purchase produce for storage. The price growth is also backed by rumors about lack of high-quality potatoes in the current season.
Prices of Crimean potatoes are also backed by more expensive produce in the southern regions of mainland Ukraine. It should be noted that Ukrainian potatoes are the main competitor of local produce in Crimea. Now Ukrainian potatoes are offered at RUB 17-22/kg (USD 0.23-0.30/kg) at Krymskiy Privoz Wholesale Market, Simferopol, an increase of 32% week-on-week.
Moreover, current prices of local and Ukrainian potatoes are averagely 2.5 times as high as registered a year before in Crimea, and market participants do not expect any decrease in trading activity in the nearest time.
