Ukraine to start importing Russian white cabbage soon
Ukraine may start importing white cabbage from Russia soon, according to Fruit-Inform.
«Current situation in the Eastern European white cabbage market is rather unsual for September», says Ms. Tetiana Getman, Head of Fruit-Inform. «Prices in Ukraine and Poland have already reached record high, while prices in Russia are 50% lower than in those countries».
For the present, Ukrainian and Polish farmers offer white cabbage at 0.26-0.27 euro/kg, while Russian growers are ready to ship their produce averagely at 0.13 euro/kg. Prices in Ukraine are already 4.5 times as high as registered in the same period of the previous season. Polish farmers offer their produce at prices 2.6 times as high as a year before. Meanwhile, prices in Russia are 20% lower year-on-year.
«Such sharp year-on-year increases in Ukraine and Poland are connected with drought, which has already resulted in an average fall of 20% in production expectations», says Ms. Getman. «At the same time, weather conditions are better in Russia, and areas under white cabbage have significantly expanded there in the current season».
As a result, if current trends remain in effect, Russian traders will most likely start exporting white cabbage soon.
